Ask ten runners whether stretching is important and you may receive ten different answers.

Some runners stretch religiously before every run. Others never stretch at all. Stretching can complement that process.

It rarely replaces it.

This is one reason modern endurance training has gradually shifted toward a greater emphasis on strength and movement quality. Athletes are increasingly recognizing that the body needs more than flexibility. It needs the ability to control movement under load.

The most durable runners are rarely the most flexible runners.

More often, they are the runners whose bodies can consistently tolerate the demands of training.

Strength usually plays a much larger role.

What I Have Seen With Athletes

One athlete who comes to mind is Alizé.

Throughout her marathon preparation, she balanced work, family responsibilities, and training. Like many runners, her available time was limited. Every recovery activity had to justify its place within an already busy schedule.
